Frequently Asked Questions

If you don't find the answer to your question here, please send us a message at info@flowtattoo.fi.

It's a good idea to get in touch about designing your tattoo as soon as you have a rough idea of when you’d like to get it done. Currently, there is no need for months-long waiting lists for any of our tattoo artists. The design process starts with a consultation, after which an appointment will be scheduled.

Taking care of your tattoo is crucial for its healing process and color retention. Please read the detailed instructions in your aftercare sheet, and don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns.

  1. Clean: Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo. Remove the wrap the same evening the tattoo was done or according to the instructions given with a wound dressing.
  2. Wash the tattoo: Use unscented soap and lukewarm water to gently clean the tattoo. Avoid scrubbing. Instead, pat dry gently with a soft towel or lint-free paper.
  3. Apply a thin layer of ointment: Use the provided Hustle Butter Deluxe or an unscented basic cream on the tattoo. Avoid using too much ointment to allow the skin to breathe.
  4. Avoid getting it wet and sun exposure: Avoid swimming, saunas, or bathing until the tattoo has healed, usually at least 4 weeks. Also, avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds, as UV rays can break down the pigment and fade the tattoo.
  5.  Avoid scratching or rubbing: The tattoo may itch and start to peel, but do not scratch it. Do not pick at any scabs that may form. Let it heal naturally.
  6. Follow your artist’s instructions: Each tattoo artist may have slightly different aftercare instructions, so it’s important to follow their guidance. Different types of tattoos may have different healing processes.
  7. Regular care: Continue to keep the tattoo clean and use ointment as needed until it is fully healed. Do not let your tattoo dry out too much, as it looks better when moisturized.

If you notice signs of infection, such as increasing pain, redness, swelling, or discharge, contact a doctor. An infected tattoo requires immediate care.

The healing time of a tattoo varies individually and depends on many factors, such as the size of the tattoo, its location, skin type, and how well aftercare instructions are followed. Generally, a tattoo goes through several stages during healing:

  1. First few days: The tattoo may be red and swollen immediately after being done. During this time, it may bleed and exude excess ink.
  2. Following weeks: The tattoo starts to peel and dry out. The skin may flake and look slightly dull. This is normal in the healing process.
  3. Overall healing: Most tattoos heal in about 4-6 weeks. However, complete healing and final color setting may take up to a few months.

It is important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your tattoo artist to ensure the quickest and smoothest healing process possible. It is normal for the tattoo to look different at various stages of healing, and some areas may appear faded or dull. Be patient, as the final result will be visible once the tattoo is fully healed.

A tattoo can change over time for several reasons:

  1. Skin changes: Aging, weight fluctuations, or changes in skin elasticity can affect the appearance of the tattoo. For example, the skin stretching or shrinking can stretch or distort the tattoo.
  2. Sun exposure: Exposure to the sun’s UV rays can fade a tattoo over time. Therefore, it’s important to protect your tattoo from the sun by using sunscreen.
  3. Post-healing changes: During the healing process, colors may change slightly or even out. This is part of the normal healing process.
  4. Tattoo quality: A well-made and well-cared-for tattoo generally retains its original appearance longer.

Although a tattoo may change slightly over time, a well-cared-for and professionally done tattoo usually retains its appearance well for many years. Careful aftercare and protection from the sun can help maintain the brightness and sharpness of the tattoo longer. Additionally, regular touch-up visits with the tattoo artist can help maintain or restore the tattoo if needed.

We do not tattoo underage individuals under any circumstances. You must be 18 years old on the day of the tattoo appointment. We check IDs for everyone.

Checklist for First-Timers

Send us a message at info@flowtattoo.fi if you can’t find the answer to your question.

Think carefully about the tattoo you want. Choose a meaningful image, text, or symbol that will hold significance for a long time. On the other hand, a tattoo can simply be something you think looks cool—it doesn’t always need to have a deep meaning. As you plan your idea, keep in mind not to unintentionally create something offensive. Avoid making rash decisions or deciding under the influence of substances.

Our artists may have restrictions on tattooing certain body parts. If an artist feels it's best to avoid a particular area, they have the right to decline your request. In this case, the customer can decide whether to choose a new location for the tattoo or not.

Carefully think about where you want the tattoo on your body. Make sure the spot fits the design and that you're happy with how visible it will be. Tattoos may affect how you're perceived, especially in some cultures, and visible tattoos could impact job opportunities. Don’t underestimate this factor.

Talk openly with your artist about your plans. We’ll help you visualize the design, placement, and size. Feel free to share any uncertainties or concerns about the tattoo process. Book a consultation with your artist if you'd like to meet them before the tattoo session. Getting to know you helps us provide the best possible experience.

We take care of your safety by using clean tools and maintaining a sterile work environment. You can help by showering before your appointment and wearing clean, loose clothing that won’t irritate the tattooed area.

Tattooing involves some level of pain. Small tattoos may feel uncomfortable, while larger ones could be more painful. Be prepared for the discomfort, and discuss pain relief options with your artist if needed. Often, the initial pain eases within 30 minutes as the skin becomes numb. You can also take anti-inflammatory medication beforehand.

Learn about tattoo care before and after the session. Follow the aftercare instructions provided by your artist to ensure proper healing. A well-done tattoo can turn bad if aftercare is neglected, and an infected tattoo poses serious health risks. Read your artist’s aftercare instructions carefully, and contact them if you have any questions.

There are several health factors to consider before getting a tattoo, which may vary based on individual medical conditions and histories:

  1. Allergies: Some may be allergic to tattoo inks or dyes, leading to severe reactions.
  2. Skin Conditions: Issues like psoriasis, eczema, or active acne in the tattoo area can hinder healing or cause complications.
  3. Blood Clotting Disorders: These can increase the risk of bleeding during the tattoo process and slow healing.
  4. Immune System Issues: A weakened immune system due to autoimmune diseases or immunosuppressive medications may interfere with healing.
  5. Pregnancy: Getting a tattoo while pregnant is not recommended, as it may pose risks to both mother and baby.
  6. Diabetes: Diabetes can affect the healing process, increase the risk of infection, and make managing blood sugar more challenging if a tattoo is done in areas frequently used for glucose monitoring.
  7. Infectious Diseases: Bloodborne diseases can put your artist at risk, and cross-contamination is a serious health hazard.
  8. Medications: Some medications, like blood thinners, immunosuppressants, and certain antibiotics, can impact the tattooing process and healing.

Always discuss your health concerns with your doctor before getting a tattoo, especially if you have chronic conditions.

Here are a few important steps to follow to ensure your body is ready for a tattoo and your experience goes as smoothly as possible:

  1. Get enough sleep—your body handles pain better when well-rested.
  2. Eat before your appointment; low blood sugar can make you feel faint.
  3. Bring snacks to avoid hunger or a blood sugar drop. Sugary drinks can be helpful. In emergencies, you can grab a snack or juice box from our café.
  4. Avoid caffeine before your tattoo session, as it can increase bleeding.
  5. Warm socks can be useful if your feet tend to get cold, as your body may feel cooler during tattooing.
  6. Don’t come to your appointment if you’re sick—it can worsen your symptoms and unnecessarily expose the artist.
  7. Moisturize the area to be tattooed for at least a week before your appointment. Hydrated skin is easier to tattoo and may even reduce pain in some areas.

Here are some clothing suggestions depending on the tattoo area:

  • Arm/Forearm: A sleeveless shirt is best. In colder weather, wear a top with sleeves that can be removed on one side during the session.
  • Thigh: Shorts that are short enough to expose the area. For cooler weather, wear pants that can be easily removed, or change at the studio.
  • Lower Leg/Calf: Pants that can be pulled above the knee without being too tight.
  • Foot: Keep in mind that the foot may swell significantly, so choose footwear accordingly.
  • Stomach/Chest: Wear loose-fitting clothing such as sports bras or bralettes that don’t cover the tattoo area. An open-front shirt works best.
  • Back: Avoid bras or remove them at the studio. Wear an open-front shirt, such as a hoodie, that can be reversed during the session to allow access to the back.
  • Buttocks: Wear stretchy, non-restrictive underwear, preferably thong-style. Disposable thongs are available at the studio.

Your clothes may get stained with ink, even though we’re careful. Tattoo ink doesn’t always wash out, so we recommend wearing dark or black clothing. Avoid expensive items, as we won’t be responsible for any damage.

Remember to bring a photo ID. We’ll check it when you fill out the client form. We accept driver’s licenses, ID cards, or passports.
